 Namig Abbasov was born in 1940. In 1962, he graduated from Journalism department of Azerbaijan State University. He held a senior post in Absheron newspaper between 1962 and 1976. In 1970, he started to work for the Party and held the position of Second secretary of Absheron district committee of Communist Party of Azerbaijan SSR. In 1977, he started to work for security services. In 1979, he graduated from higher school of KGB and worked as deputy head of sector, head of sector and deputy chairman of KGB of Azerbaijan SSR. Between 1992 and 1994, he served as Deputy and First Deputy Minister of National Security. From October, 1994 till March, 1995 he executed duties of Minister of National Security and from March, 1995 till July, 2004 he held the position of Minister of National Security. He raised till the rank of Colonel-general.
