Elimination of existing risks and threats with the purpose of providing favourable conditions for protection and development of economic potential, as well as strengthening economic power are vital factors of the national security of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Based on this point, the risks and threats directed against the national security of Azerbaijan are regularly controlled by the Ministry of National Security, their sources, current and perspective targets, as well as activity directions on prevention of appropriate cases are being determined. 

Economical security is crucial for ensuring generally the national security of Azerbaijan from the point of different vital factors. First of all, comprehensive economical security is important for successful development of all spheres of economy. Secondly, environment of economical security is considered as the most important factor of cooperation among the states, transnational companies and businessmen. And thirdly powerful economy constitutes a ground for strong society, army and state.

In 2007 transnational organized group was established that engaged in drawing out money from the bank accounts of the International Bank of Azerbaijan with forged plastic cards. As a result of this criminal activity 53000 US dollars belonging to the Azerbaijani citizens was stolen from the territories of different countries. 8 members of the group, including 2 foreigners were sentenced to imprisonment.

With the purpose of effective organizing activities directed against the corruption, based on the legislative base developed in line with the international standards the Ministry of National Security conducts struggle against the corruption within its competencies.  For the prevention of similar crimes it was conducted investigations on 12 cases by the appropriate department of the Ministry of National Security established in 2005, collected facts were sent to prosecutors’ offices and 15 persons were convicted. As a result of these measures certain amounts of misappropriated money have been paid to the state budget.

During 2007 and the first half of 2008 as a result of operatively-search actions against the prevention of corruption crimes 9 criminal facts (6 facts in 2007, 3 facts in 2008) were established and 17 persons were detained.
